REVUE DIORAMA NO.1, LEGIBILITY

Revue I Graphic and Type Design

11-2018

Following in the footsteps of 1970s international type specimen newsprint and type foundries journals, the Revue Diorama is a project which takes as a starting point an historical quote. The latter is sent to a variety of guests for them to react to. The editorial team then gives shape to these contents in a bespoke way for each of the issue of Revue Diorama.

MESH TYPEFACE

Typedesign I Alphabet

Revue Diorama chooses for each issue a typeface to compose the seven letters of the word «diorama» on the front cover, before introducing its own definition with the same typography. For this second issue, we choose Mesh typeface Mesh’s original drawing comes from a sculpture of a hybrid furniture. As Jean Alessandrini announced in his Codex 80, this “computrice” refers to the early typefaces legible by machines. An aesthetic that was taken up and digested by science-fiction at the time. Having as basic principle in our video game to be able to stand up, Mesh typeface thus populates the world with his letters and can be read as a 3D type specimen in the virtual world of Revue Diorama No.2. We can see it evolve under many seams: gigantic, luminous, material to construct buildings, ceilings, etc. It is by using the same vanishing point to shoot that we obtain the .otf version of 2D Mesh. This sense of perspective, reminiscent of its 3D object history, allows us to benefit from a wide variety of bevels, reflecting the concerns for a systematic modernism, exacerbated and absurd.

REVUE DIORAMA NO.2 GAMING

3D Type I Gaming I Virtual experience

Initiated in 2017 in a dynamic approach to the narratives medias between bibliophilia and technophilia, the theme of this second opus, based on a sentence by painter Victor Vasarely, invites us to question the new forms of the reading experience. This is why, exclusively for Revue Diorama No.2, an interactive extension will be added to the print and the website: a video game. Linked to the book, this virtual diorama representing a city of words retraces the sentence of the call for contributions, in a real situation of gameplay. A geometric city, or “typomondo”, emerges from an iridescent desert. A “3D series” and an original concept of digital-magazine will be available online for free on the shop www.revue-diorama.com. A common summary traces in the version of the book the location of contributions in the virtual world. Establishing a real dialogue between the two supports, it is through updates - like episodes of a tv-show- that the contributions from the publication will be interpreted into a 3D object and integrated into the game throughout 2020. An evolutionary work, which will give rise to various digital ambulation events.
